How does a container gantry crane work?

Container Gantry Crane is a specialized equipment used for handling containers, commonly found in ports, docks, and container yards. Their main function is to unload or load containers from or onto ships, and to transport containers within the yard. Main components

Bridge: including the main beam and support legs, the main beam spans the work area, and the support legs are installed on the ground track.

Trolley: It moves horizontally on the main beam and is equipped with a lifting device.

Drive system: including electric motor, transmission device, and control system, used to drive small cars and lifting devices.

Track: Installed on the ground, supporting legs move longitudinally along the track, covering the entire yard or dock area.

Cabin: located on the bridge, for operators to control the movement and operation of the crane.

Working principle

Location:

The crane moves on the track to the location of the vessel or yard that needs to be loaded and unloaded. The operator precisely positions the crane in the control room through the control system.

Lifting operation:

The lifting equipment is connected to the trolley through a steel cable and pulley system. The car moves horizontally on the bridge and positions the lifting device above the container.

Grab container:

The lifting device descends and is fixed to the four corner locking points of the container. The locking mechanism is activated to ensure that the lifting device firmly grasps the container.

Lifting and moving:

The lifting device lifts the container to a certain height to ensure safe operation. The car moves along the bridge to unload the container from the ship or retrieve it from the yard.

Vertical movement:

The bridge moves longitudinally along the track to transport containers to the target location, such as above a yard, truck, or other transportation equipment.

Placing containers:

Lower the lifting device and place the container in the target position. The locking mechanism is released, and the lifting device is released from the container.

Return to initial position:

Return the trolley and lifting equipment to their initial position and prepare for the next operation.

Security and control

Automation system: Modern container gantry cranes are usually equipped with advanced automation and control systems to ensure efficient and safe operation. This includes anti sway systems, automatic positioning systems, and load monitoring systems.

Operator training: Operators need to undergo professional training and be proficient in the operating procedures and safety measures of cranes.

Regular maintenance: Cranes need to be regularly maintained to ensure the normal operation of mechanical and electrical systems, and to prevent malfunctions and accidents.
